Slime Farm Location Guide: Choose the Best Slime Chunks

By . Last reviewed November 7, 2026

A slime farm only works if it sits in the right chunks, and that choice is made before you move a single block. This guide shows how to pick a slime farm location in Minecraft Java Edition: what makes a chunk a slime chunk, how to turn map coordinates into a build area, and how to check your spot before you invest hours in it.

Short answer

In Java Edition, find your seed, map the slime chunks around your base with the slime chunk finder, and pick the area where several slime chunks touch. Build underground, below Y=40, inside those chunks.

What makes a slime chunk

A slime chunk is a 16 by 16 column of the world, and about one chunk in ten is one. In Java Edition the game decides this from the world seed and the chunk's coordinates, so the pattern is fixed for your world. Slimes spawn in slime chunks below Y=40 whatever the light level, except in mushroom fields and the deep dark. Swamps follow their own spawn rules, so treat a swamp farm as a separate project.

Bedrock Edition works differently. Its slime chunks do not depend on the seed and are the same in every world, so this guide's seed-based steps are for Java.

Step 1: get your seed

You need the exact seed. Run /seed in Java, or read it from the world files if you cannot open the world. Our guide on how to find your Minecraft seed shows every method.

Step 2: map the chunks near your base

Open the slime chunk finder, enter your seed and the coordinates of your base, and choose a map size. Green squares are slime chunks. Move the map in steps to scan the area around your base and any other place you are willing to build.

Step 3: choose a spot with several slime chunks together

A single slime chunk is a weak farm location. Look for places where several slime chunks sit side by side, since the tool also outlines the densest 3 by 3 area in view. Mobs spawn around a player rather than inside one box, so the more slime chunks near your standing position, the more places slimes can appear. As a rule of thumb, hostile mobs spawn between 24 and 128 blocks from the player, so slime chunks inside that range matter more than ones far away.

Step 4: turn chunks into block coordinates

Chunk coordinates are block coordinates divided by 16 and rounded down. Chunk 3 covers blocks 48 to 63, and chunk -1 covers blocks -16 to -1. Select a chunk in the finder to see its exact block range, then mark the edges at your build site so you can stay inside the slime chunk while you dig.

Step 5: check the spot before you build

  1. Dig a small, enclosed chamber below Y=40 inside a predicted slime chunk.
  2. Make sure there is open floor space, because slimes need room to spawn.
  3. Wait for a while and see whether slimes appear.
  4. If none appear after a fair wait, recheck the seed, confirm you are playing Java and look at your chunk maths.

This test takes minutes and can save a failed build. If the result still disagrees with the map, read our mismatch checklist.

Common mistakes

  • Using the wrong edition. A Java seed tells you nothing about Bedrock slime chunks.
  • Mistyping the seed. One wrong digit changes every chunk.
  • Building above Y=40. The slime chunk rule applies below Y=40.
  • Rounding chunk maths towards zero. Negative coordinates must round down.
  • Assuming a swamp is the same. Swamps have separate spawn rules.

Plan around your base

The best location is one you will visit often, so check the chunks near your main base and your Nether portal hub first. If you link portals there, the Nether portal calculator converts coordinates and tells you whether two portals could link to each other.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the best slime chunks for a farm?

Map the slime chunks around your base with your Java seed, then choose an area where several slime chunks touch. Build underground, below Y=40, inside those chunks.

At what height do slimes spawn in slime chunks?

Below Y=40, regardless of light level, except in mushroom fields and the deep dark. Swamps have separate spawn rules.

Do I need the seed to find slime chunks?

In Java Edition, yes. The game decides slime chunks from the seed and chunk coordinates. In Bedrock they are the same in every world.

How do I convert coordinates to a chunk?

Divide the block coordinate by 16 and round down. Block X=-5 is in chunk -1, and block X=20 is in chunk 1.

How can I check that a chunk really is a slime chunk?

Dig an enclosed space below Y=40 inside the predicted chunk, leave open floor, and wait to see whether slimes spawn. If they do not, recheck your seed and edition.
